Why a Credit Union?

Credit unions exist to help people, not make a profit.

A credit union is a democratic, member-owned cooperative. So when you join a credit union, you’re more than a member; you’re an owner – and that means you have a say in how your credit union is run.

Credit unions are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, all active members who are directly elected by the credit union’s other member-owners. With their vote, each member has a direct impact on the direction of the credit union. As part of the democratic process, each credit union holds an annual election where members select candidates for the Board of Directors. This is very different from a bank, where stockholders vote according to the number of shares of stock they own.

STFCU serves anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in St. Tammany Parish.

Reasons to Join STFCU

You Can Act Like You Own the Place, Because You Do

St. Tammany Federal Credit Union is owned by members – people just like you. Unlike banks that need to make a profit to keep shareholders happy, St Tammany Federal Credit Union places people before profit.

Lifetime Membership

Once you join St. Tammany Federal Credit Union and establish your membership, you may remain an active member for your lifetime, even if your membership eligibility should change.

Committees

Members benefit deeply from an experienced group of volunteers leading your credit union’s committees. We value the different backgrounds, perspectives, and talents of our volunteers that represent our membership. As a credit union member, you have the opportunity to serve on various committees.

Voting Rights

As a member, you have one vote that can influence the direction of the credit union.

Board of Directors

Credit unions are owned by their members, and are led by a volunteer Board of Directors, elected by the credit union’s membership. Any member can be nominated to run for an open position on our Board of Directors.

Annual Meeting

STFCU holds its Annual Meeting each year, which gives members a chance to hear about STFCU’s year in review and speak with Board Members, executives, and staff in person.
